OMEdit freezes when starting/initializing a SSP simulation from the GUI

Description
When starting a SSP simulation under Linux from the GUI, OMEdit hangs. It can be worked around by starting the simulation from the command line if a switch to keep temporary files is included:
OMSimulator --deleteTempFiles=false ../TestSSP.ssp
Note that this behavior is already present in OpenModelica versions <= 1.16. This issue is also different from https://trac.openmodelica.org/OpenModelica/ticket/6225 that is about the HUBCAP OpenModelica sandbox.
If the simulation is started from the GUI in Windows, the simulation behaves as expected and OMEdit does not freeze.
