OMEdit cannot start on Mac OS X 10.6.8

Description
When attempting to start OMEdit on Mac OS X 10.6.8, I receive the following error:
Unable to find OMEdit server, Object reference file /var/folders/../openmodelica... not created. OMEdit will close.
I used macports as described in the download page, albeit I had some issues, which are documented here . I was also given some diagnostic assistance, which is also described on the same page.

Adeel: I had similar issues on OSX 10.8. It only seems to work correctly if you start OMEdit from a terminal; not if you use the launcher.
